Service has always been a meaningful part of my life, but recently, I found a way to connect my natural talents with the work I do for others. This connection has deepened my sense of purpose and allowed me to contribute in ways that feel authentic and fulfilling. In this blog, I want to share how my service activities are helping me to use my skills in a way that reflects who I am and what I value most. I will post in upcoming weeks about my largest project yet, leading a team and buying, preparing and serving a dinner to over 50 community members in need through a local soup kitchen.

Discovering the Link Between Talent and Service
For much of my life, I have been aware of certain talents—whether it’s problem-solving, communication, or organizing—that come naturally to me. However, I didn’t always know how to apply these gifts in a way that made a real difference. Service activities offered a perfect opportunity to bridge that gap.
When I began charity fundraising, I noticed how my ability to coordinate resources and connect people helped projects run smoothly. This wasn’t just about completing tasks; it was about using my strengths to support others and create positive outcomes. Through my efforts and with generous support from others, I was able over the last ten years to have successful fundraisers for the Greater Chicago Food Depository for the past decade, a local food pantry, a local shelter for women and children affected by domestic violence, school classroom libraries and book bags and supplies for students.
Another constant in my life has been preparing and sharing food - creating connections among people and fortifying relationships. Food brings people together on many levels, from the home baked goods shared in the workplace to family meals, it is as necessary as nourishment for the spirit as it is for the body. Fellowship over food builds community, by using shared meals as an opportunity to connect and encourage one another.
I've always enjoyed practicing the art of hospitality, the preparation and presentation involved to transform a simple meal into a restorative experience. My mother gave me a love of flowers and beautiful table settings and tablecloths. They give a visual welcome, letting my guests know their presence is valued. While food is present, the real goal is the "substance" of fellowship—sharing life, stories, and faith.
This joy of sharing hospitality makes me excited for the upcoming meal share I am coordinating. I have an awareness of food insecurity which affects so many and any service efforts I can bring to eliminate that for my community is rewarding to me.
How Service Activities Highlight My Strengths
Each service activity I engage in reveals different facets of my talents. Here are some examples of how this plays out: When I began collecting donations for local community groups, I noticed how my ability to coordinate resources and connect people helped projects run smoothly. This wasn’t just about completing tasks; it was about using my strengths to support others and create positive outcomes.
Organizing Events and Resources
I have a knack for planning and logistics. When I help organize food drives or other collection drives, I use this skill to ensure everything runs efficiently. I often make use of virtual fundraising, coordinating with agencies to determine how best we can contribute and ensuring donations are delivered. This provides an easy to use experience for those looking for a way to contribute and gives the recipients a greater share of donations.
Communicating Clearly and Compassionately
Whether I’m speaking with volunteers or community members, clear communication is essential. I find that my ability to listen and explain ideas simply helps build trust and encourages participation.
Problem-Solving on the Spot
Service work often involves unexpected challenges. My talent for quick thinking allows me to adapt plans and find solutions without losing momentum.
These examples show how my natural abilities are not just useful but essential in service settings. They help me contribute in ways that feel meaningful and effective.
The Personal Growth That Comes From Serving Others
Using my talents in service has also led to personal growth. It has pushed me to develop new skills and deepen existing ones. For instance, working with diverse groups has improved my cultural awareness and empathy. Managing projects has strengthened my leadership and teamwork abilities.
This growth is rewarding because it aligns with my values. I want to be someone who helps others and makes a positive difference. Service activities give me a platform to live out those values every day.

This joy motivates me to continue seeking ways to contribute. It also inspires me to encourage others to explore how their unique abilities can support their communities.
